As we are all aware, the much debated health care bill is now law.  Some of the provisions in the bill make a lot of sense for Americans, such as tax credits for small businesses which offer employees health insurance. The bill is by no means  perfect and many improvements will be needed in the future.  For example, costs could be reduced greatly by requiring health insurance companies to compete across state lines.

I would like to hear your thoughts regarding the recently passed health care legislation.

During the last several years, it has become increasingly evident that many members of Congress often vote the way their party dictates, which may not always be in the best interest of their constituents.

I believe that elected officials must always put people before politics.

Contributions from citizens are obviously necessary to run a successful campaign. The Tom Hayhurst for Congress campaign recently reported that well over 90% of all contributions to date are from individual citizens.

Unfortunately, a recent Supreme Court decision opened the door for unlimited corporate contributions to political campaigns.

Much like the rest of the country, Northeast Indiana is facing an urgent educational crisis. It is time to implement innovative new math and science programs, similar to the approach we took 50 years ago when the United States was challenged by advances Russian technology.

Educating our young people is the key to securing more high-quality jobs for Northeast Indiana.  What are your thoughts as to how we should accomplish this goal?

In my opinion, protection of the environment is very important.  We can all do much at the local level to protect our planet.  Environmental legislation is currently working its way through Congress.  Let me know your thoughts regarding this important topic.

We all know that there is a vigorous national debate regarding health care in the U.S. As a physician who volunteers lots of time in free health clinics I am convinced that all Americans MUST have affordable quality health care. There are many ways to achieve this goal.

I would like to welcome all of you to the Tom Hayhurst for Congress blog!

As a candidate and future member of Congress one of my most important responsibilities is to listen to the views of the citizens of the 3rd Congressional District. One of the biggest challenges facing northeast Indiana at this time is the loss of quality jobs.  This problem dates back well into the 1990’s. We must bring more jobs and better jobs to the 3rd District!  I am convinced that we need to reform our international trade policy to give Northeast Indiana manufacturers and workers a more level playing field on which to compete with workers in China and other countries.
